Miguel Tiehernandez’s community is still reconciling with being stuck in the middle of a 36-year-long civil war that wasn’t their own. He was 10 years old when the Guatemalan government ambushed his town, accusing the Indigenous Ixil people of supporting guerillas (rebel forces). His family fled to the mountains, hiding while bombs dropped overhead. Upon returning, Juil was decimated. The military handed Tiehernandez a gun and told him to find the guerillas.
